Contrary to hard lasers or power lasers, which are used in surgery, therapy lasers use low energy or are “cold”. They are employed in low-level laser therapy, a modern form of high-tech phototherapy.
Therapy lasers are used for photobiostimulation, i.e. to stimulate the body’s own processes. Synonyms are biostimulation lasers, soft lasers and cold light lasers. In the professional scientific literature the term most commonly used is low-level lasers.
Therapy lasers are employed in human– and veterinary complementary medicine. Depending on the way they are applied, we distinguish between point lasers (small areas, trigger, pain, and acupuncture points, among others), broad-area lasers or laser showers (large areas), laser combs (for dense fur or very hairy skin surfaces) and special lasers with replaceable fibre-optic cables.
